BIRDING FIELD TRIPS IN ESSEX COUNTY
Led by Dave Hall, Associate Naturalist

Field trips are designed for ages 12 and up. Have you ever wanted to “bird watch” but didn’t know where to begin? Would you like to find some of the hidden gems in Essex County? Let New Jersey Audubon be your guide. This is the time of year to see, hear and learn about the species of birds that spend the winter to in Essex County. Walks encourage beginners and challenge experts. Registration via Eventbrite is REQUIRED for all programs.

New Jersey Audubon field trips and programs adhere to CDC guidelines; leaders have the right to ask a participant to leave the program if someone is not adhering to these guidelines for the health and safety of all. Leaders and participants must wear face coverings throughout the program and maintain physical distancing of at least 6 feet. Leaders may remove their face covering to be heard by the group while maintaining social distance.

Please do not come to a program if you are sick, have a sick family member or have reason to believe you may have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus. There will be no sharing of equipment including binoculars or spotting scopes.

Weequahic Park Birding Walk

9:00 a.m. to 11 a.m. 
Visit an Essex County oasis while searching for wintering ducks, gulls, and songbirds. All can be viewed along an easy trail around the lake.

Hatfield Swamp Birding Walk
Saturday, December 12
8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Take a journey into the frozen swamp to search for winter visitors and lingering fall migrants that call the heart of western Essex County home.

Search the edges of the swamp for wintering birds such as sparrows and woodpeckers. Be prepared for muddy or icy conditions.

South Mountain Reservation Birding Walk

Visit several key locations within one of Essex County’s largest parks. Discover how easy it is to find wildlife in winter when there is plenty of food, water and shelter. We will explore various locations within the park.

Take a journey into the frozen swamp to search for winter visitors and residents that call the heart of western Essex County home. Footing could be icy or muddy depending on the weather.

Riker Hill/Becker Farm Birding Walk

Walk though old farm fields to discover overwintering field birds. Hike along the ridge at Riker Hill for great views and a look at woodland birds.
